India and Cyprus Deepen Educational Cooperation: ICCR and University of Nicosia Sign MoU to Establish ICCR Chair of Indian Studies

In a significant step towards strengthening educational ties between India and Republic of Cyprus, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the University of Nicosia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an ICCR Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Nicosia  on 15 June 2025, coinciding with the visit of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi to the Republic of Cyprus.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Manish, High Commissioner of India to Republic of Cyprus and Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, Rector of the University of Nicosia.

The establishment of the ICCR Chair aims to promote academic collaboration between the two countries. The Chair will facilitate the presence of an Indian Professor at the University, contributing to the expansion of India-related studies and fostering deeper people-to-people engagement.

Mr. Manish, High Commissioner of India, remarked:

This initiative marks a new chapter in the educational and cultural partnership between India and Cyprus. It reflects our shared vision to foster greater understanding and collaboration. Both ICCR and the University of Nicosia will jointly determine the academic area of focus and select a suitable professor to lead the Chair. We look forward to welcoming an Indian scholar who will not only teach but also serve as a cultural ambassador.”

Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, Rector of the University of Nicosia, added:

The establishment of the ICCR Chair of Indian Studies is a significant step forward for our University. It opens a new window to the rich cultural and civilizational heritage of India, offering our students and faculty valuable opportunities for global learning and cross-cultural engagement.”

This initiative reflects the shared commitment of India and Cyprus to nurturing long-term partnerships in education and culture, and to strengthening the vibrant bilateral relationship.
