Odissi Dance Evening in Limassol Showcases the Elegance of Indian Classical Arts
Date: 1 July 2025
Venue: Lanitieo Theatre, Limassol, Republic of Cyprus
As part of its ongoing cultural outreach and in celebration of the rich traditions of Indian performing arts, the High Commission of India, Nicosia, in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), presented an Odissi classical dance performance on 1 July 2025 at the historic Lanitieo Theatre in Limassol.
The performance was led by the internationally acclaimed Odissi exponent, Smt. Sujata Mohapatra, recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and her talented troupe from Srjan, the Odissi Nrityabasa founded by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. The evening was a tribute to the timeless grace, rhythm, and spiritual depth of Indian classical dance, bringing alive stories rooted in devotion, beauty, and cultural heritage.
High Commissioner of India to Cyprus, Mr. Manish, delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the strong cultural affinity between India and Cyprus, and the role of classical arts in strengthening people-to-people ties. He warmly welcomed over 150 guests, comprising members of the Cypriot and Indian communities, local cultural enthusiasts, academicians, and officials.
The audience was treated to four captivating Odissi pieces, each demonstrating the intricate footwork, expressive abhinaya (expression), and lyrical storytelling that define the Odissi tradition. The performance drew admiration for its aesthetic precision and emotional richness.

Felicitation and Community Engagement
The evening concluded with a felicitation ceremony, during which the High Commissioner honoured each performing artist with a bouquet in appreciation of their artistic excellence and cultural contribution. The gesture was warmly received by the audience, who responded with a standing ovation.
A particularly memorable moment was the post-event interaction, where numerous guests gathered to meet the performers, take photographs, and engage in informal conversation—a true reflection of the warmth and cultural curiosity shared between the people of India and Cyprus.
This event marked another significant step in the Mission’s efforts to promote India’s classical traditions, foster cross-cultural dialogue, and build enduring bridges of friendship through the universal language of art.
