High Commissioner attends screening of “The World Shrinks” at The Cyprus Institute
High Commissioner Mr. Manish attended the screening of the documentary “The World Shrinks” on 3 February 2026 at The Cyprus Institute, Nicosia. The screening was supported by the High Commission of India, Nicosia.
The documentary presents a compelling India–Cyprus connection through science, tradition and living heritage. Drawing on genetic research and archaeology, it highlights that Cyprus’ endangered indigenous cattle carry Indian Bos indicus genetic ancestry, pointing to ancient movements of animals, people and ideas across early trade and migration routes linking the Indian subcontinent with the Eastern Mediterranean.
The film also brings out striking cultural parallels. Testimonies of Cypriot farmers reflect traditions of naming cattle, caring for them as part of the household, and a moral reluctance to slaughter them for meat. These practices resonate with India’s civilisational respect for cattle as symbols of life, sustenance and harmony with nature.
Following the screening, the High Commissioner interacted with researchers and the audience, noting that modern science is helping rediscover ancient civilisational linkages and that traditional knowledge remains relevant to contemporary discussions on biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable agriculture. He also met Prof. Stavros Malas, President of The Cyprus Institute, and discussed possible avenues for collaboration in scientific research, heritage studies, sustainability and people-to-people exchanges.
The engagement highlighted how culture, science and shared human values continue to bring India and Cyprus closer, while reaffirming the role of cultural diplomacy and knowledge partnerships in strengthening bilateral relations.
