Celebration of the 11th International Day of Yoga 2025 with UN Peacekeepers
Date: 17 June 2025
Venue: UNFICYP Headquarters, Nicosia, Republic of Cyprus
As part of the global outreach commemorating the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025, the High Commission of India, Nicosia, in collaboration with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), organized a special yoga session on 17 June 2025 at the UNFICYP Headquarters in Nicosia.
The session was held under this year’s global theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” and highlighted yoga’s holistic approach to individual and collective well-being, particularly within the context of international peacekeeping.
The event was graced by High Commissioner of India to Cyprus, Mr. Manish, and Colonel Patrick Andrew Allen, OBE, Acting Force Commander and Chief of Staff, UNFICYP. In his remarks, the High Commissioner noted:
“Yoga represents India’s timeless gift to humanity—uniting body, mind, and spirit. Its adoption by the international peacekeeping community reaffirms its global relevance, particularly in promoting harmony and resilience.”
Also present were senior UNFICYP officers including Major Dharmpal Singh, who played a key coordinating role, along with Ms. Lauren McAlister and Lt. Petra Vitazova. The yoga session featured a live demonstration led by a certified instructor from the Yoga Association of Cyprus, and witnessed enthusiastic participation by UN peacekeepers and mission staff.
The practice of yoga in a peacekeeping environment underscored its importance in enhancing mental clarity, physical well-being, and inner stability—qualities essential to the challenges of international service and conflict resolution.
The event reaffirmed India’s commitment to promoting global wellness and peacebuilding through cultural diplomacy. The High Commission of India extends sincere appreciation to UNFICYP and all participants for their cooperation and support in making this event a meaningful success.
